Boston Dynamics describes a new generation of hand for Atlas in a blog post published on 1 Oct 2026. The post compares two versions: “GR2 had 7 degrees of freedom. GR3 now has 13.”

The new hand has four fingers, including “The four DOF opposable thumb.” According to the post, dense pressure tactile sensors cover the fingertips and palm, and every joint uses direct actuation with a single actuator type; the actuators are encapsulated, with no cables crossing the joints. The company calls it “This new generation hand for our Atlas® robot.”

The Robot Report covered the design on 9 Oct 2026. All figures are the vendor’s and have not been measured independently. The status on the Robopear Atlas card does not change with this item.
